This palm is so well known it's easy to forget it originated on Lord Howe Island, 600 kilometers off Australia.
Its graceful, drooping fronds and tolerance of cold, humidity and low light made it popular in palm-obsessed Europe in the 1870s. Unlike tropical palms, it could be grown without an expensive, heated conservatory.
One of the most popular palms which if you stepped back into the Victorian times would have been seen in many a drawing room. They are still popular today as they are easy to grow, evergreen and will complement most rooms. Keep them away from direct sunlight as this can burn the leaves, and away from cold draught. Please note that the pot in the photograph is not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a black plastic pot). They do however make excellent potted plants, and if you wish to pot yours up, we do have a wide range of pots on our website to choose from.
Home care: The golden rule is not to leave this plant sitting in water,- they like a moist soil but won't like to have the roots being sodden so feel the top of the soil before watering. In the winter it will still need watering but not as much. It likes humidity, so mist the leaves regularly in hot weather or if it is in a warm room.
Avoid re potting until it is really pot-bound as they don't like to be disturbed.
*Disclaimer: We love our plant babies, we talk to them, sing to them, we even cuddle them at times! And we pack our gorgeous plants for shipment extremely carefully. However, we do ask that you keep in mind that once they leave our store, we cannot guarantee how carefully they are handled in transit. And I cannot guarantee they have been sung to or talked to by the postmen! So, if a leaf is a little bent, bruised or maybe a small stem broken off, we cannot control this. If by some chance your plants do not arrive alive, never fear, we have got you covered. Just email our customer service team firstname.lastname@example.org with a quick pic (phone pics are excellent, and we love a good selfie). We will either replace the plants pronto or refund you (whatever works best).
