The Elkhorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum), also known as the Staghorn Fern, is named after its large fronds that look like Elk horns. A truly spectacular looking fern that despite it’s exotic appearance is very easy to grow. Attaches well to trunks of other trees and ferns, and can be mounted on a block or in a hanging basket.
Elk horns are so great for weekend creative ideas they happily mount to man ferns, trees, timber (do make sure you research the best way to do this) super easy and in the right conditions they grow really big into growing works of art in doors or out!
A light shade position with patches of sunlight is recommended. Will cope with light frosts but will need protection in colder areas. Good drainage is essential but like all ferns, does need regular watering, especially in dry conditions.
If you have heating units or air-conditioners, it is best to avoid placing plants underneath or next to them. This is because of the air blowing out from these units can be very hot or cold which can leave a healthy plant burnt, damaged and stressed. We recommend the Australian made Munash Organics soil food & foliage spray or The Plant Runner Plant Food or neem oil to keep you plants happy and healthy!
